Summer Camp 2022

In partnership with Wind & Oar Boat School (W&O), Oregon Youth Sailing Foundation (OYSF) is offering a free beginner boat building and sail training summer program for traditionally underrepresented Portland youth at the Willamette Sailing Club (WSC). Over 10 days, students spend from the morning building an 11 foot wooden boat with W&O, have lunch provided by OYSF on the docks, and then sail from 1-4PM with US Sailing certified and insured WSC coaches.   Building a boat is all about process, which is a key element of problem solving. So, in addition to the woodworking skills learned, the students learn to think like engineers, and practice math and science skills they may have neglected during the summer. And, the joy of using the product of their labors to explore the river is evident on each of their faces when they launch their boat.

This program combines W&O’s integrated STEAM curriculum including hands-on math and science, navigation, geography, watershed stewardship, and cultural aspects of the river with US Sailing REACH lessons and logbooks, where students learn about water clarity, weather, buoyancy, wind speed, and marine debris. This program engages students with hands-on, experiential learning promoting creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking as well as promoting water safety, leadership skills, socio-emotional development, and a connection to the water. The final day of camp culminates with the celebration and launch of their 11' row boat.

Due to the uncertainty of Covid 19 restrictions, we will not be offering summer camp to the general public this year. We regret the hardship this imposes on kids and families and sincerely hope to offer extended programs once again in 2023.
